Welcome to the Panda Class

Welcome to the Panda class with Mrs. Royle and Miss Hackleton. This page is for our parents and children to use together. It includes information about what Y1 are learning, key dates, homework and helpful websites.

This year our main aims are: to develop self confidence in our learning (even when we make mistakes), to become resilient learners who never give up when faced a challenge and to become more independent in the classroom.

Autumn Term

Our topic for Autumn 1 is “Down on the farm”. Below are some of the book that will help us bring our learning to life.

In English we will practise using our phonics knowledge in our writing. We will also look at sentence structure and using capital letters and full stops correctly. We will complete a variety of tasks by writing labelling, lists, captions (using the ‘–ing’ suffix), speech bubbles, riddles and character descriptions.

In Maths we will begin by ensuring we set out work correctly in our maths books. We will then be counting from 0 to 20 and back. We will look at different number representations, correct number formation, one more/one less, using symbols (< > =) addition using part whole models and number bonds to 10.

In Design and Technology, we will be making free standing structures, in geography we will learn about the local area and in science we will identify and classify animals. In RE we will learn about Christianity and what Christians believe, in RSHE we will look at the similarities and differences between us and in computing we will investigate how to move a robot.

Our topic for Autumn 2 is “Seasons”. Below are some of the book we will enjoy during the half term.

In English we will begin to be use adjectives to make our writing effective, considering which are appropriate for the genre and context. We will look at different sentence starters and begin using conjunctions and to join our ideas together. We will write a setting and character description, a set of instructions including time connectives and verbs and a Christmas poem using alliteration.

Please be aware this may change dependent on the skills the children need to focus on after assessments take place.

In Maths we will practise number bonds to 10, complete and compare addition and subtraction sentences, learn about fact families, count forwards and backwards, write numbers to 20 as numerals and words, find 1 more and 1 less, order numbers and investigate 2D and 3D shapes.

In history we will look back at Queen Elizabeth’s magnificent reign and the process of King Charles becoming our new monarch, in science we will look at seasonal changes, in art we will complete an artist study around David Hockney, in RE we look at the celebration of Christmas and in RSHE we will answer the question ‘who is my friend?’ and focussing on being kind and staying healthy.

The MTP for Autumn 2 will be added at half term.
