Welcome to the Tiger Class

What else could be beneath our feet?

Last half term, we learnt all about mountains and volcanoes. This half term, we are continuing our Geography topic, by looking at earthquakes and tsunamis.  We will be finding out how they happen and the impacts that they have when they take place. We will investigate ways that people can protect themselves against volcanoes and will even have a go at creating a structure that could withstand a simulated earthquake!.

The key enquiries we will be looking at are:

  1. What is an Earthquake?
  2. Where do earthquakes happen and what causes them?
  3. How do we measure earthquakes?
  4. How can we protect against earthquakes?
  5. How to earthquakes cause Tsunamis?
  6. What happened in the 2015 Nepal Earthquake?
  7. What were the impacts on Nepal and its people?

In Maths we will be learning about the properties of 2D shapes (focusing in detail on quadrilaterals and triangles), recognising and comparing angles and understanding symmetry. Then we will learn how to tell the time to the nearest minute on an analogue clock, convert times between analogue and digital, recognise the difference between AM and PM, and convert time using a 24-hour clock. Finally, we will be looking at the importance money. We will be recognising and creating amounts using British coins and notes, adding and subtracting amounts and converting between pounds and pence.

In English, we will write our own myth about how earthquakes came to be using story maps to help. Then, we will create our own poem based on Kit Wright’s “The Magic Box”. Our final piece of writing will be a magazine interview which will report someone who has been involved in a natural disaster.

Home Learning

A massive well done for the home learning you have produces so far. You never fail to amaze me with the effort and dedication you put in to your home learning tasks. Here is our new home learning grid. I hope you have lots of fun and get creative.

Other home learning activities for Spring 2 are:

  • Read to an adult at least 4 times a week and record this in your school planner.
  • Practise your spellings. Can you use each spelling in a sentence? Can you give the definition of each spelling?
  • Practise all times tables up to 12 x 12. Go on TT Rockstars at least 3 times a week. Can you beat your best score? How many coins can you collect?
