We are really looking forward to the year ahead and all the exciting learning it will bring. This year, we will explore a range of fun topics, take on new challenges and enjoy lots of engaging activities together.
In Year 2, we also focus on helping children to become more independent and build resilience—important skills for school and beyond. We aim to create an inclusive and supportive environment where children feel confident, happy and safe to make mistakes – as mistakes often provide the best learning opportunities!
It’s going to be a fantastic year full of learning, progress and fun!
Our Autumn 1 topic will be… Can you hear me?
In English, we will be learning about the alphabet. We will be practising using letter sounds and letter names. We will be learning about what a good sentence needs and will be writing sentences ensuring they include all what we need. We will also be learning about capital letters and when they should use these. To showcase our learning, we will be retelling traditional tales such as Goldilocks and the three bears and Jack and the beanstalk.
This Autumn term, children will build their understanding of place value and addition and subtraction in maths. They will explore numbers to 100 by counting, reading, writing, representing and comparing numbers. After this, we will be learning about tens and ones, ordering numbers, and counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s. In addition, pupils will develop their calculation skills by learning number bonds and fact families, adding and subtracting ones and tens, adding one- and two-digit numbers (including crossing ten), adding three one-digit numbers, comparing number sentences, and using strategies to check their calculations.
In History, we will be learning about how communication has changed over time. We will be learning all about carrier pigeons, letters, morse code and discussing mobile phones and their uses today.
In Science, we will be learning about different materials, we will be testing these to see their properties and discussing what they may be used for.
In RE, we will be learning about the good news that Jesus brings and will be reading the story of Matthew.
In Art, we will be investigating printing. We will be using recycled materials to create a print block to print different forms of communication.
In PSHE, we will be learning about families and how to make safe relationships.

Important Information
Koala’s P.E days are and Monday and Thursday.
Giraffe’s P.E days are Monday and Thursday.
Shark’s P.E days are Wednesday and Friday.
Please make sure your child’s P.E kit is in school on these days and labelled with their name and class.
Spellings for the half term are set for independent practice on Spelling Shed, however these spellings are not tested within school weekly. Instead, we will have a spelling test at the end of the half term testing a random mix of these spellings. Alongside this, your child will be set a spelling list weekly by their Phonics teacher, based on the new sounds or spelling rules they have learnt that week.
Children have a log in for TT Rockstars in their planners. This online platform will allow them to practise their 2s, 5s, and 10s timestables. Please note that timestables will not be taught in class until later in the year.
