PE & Sport

Welcome to the Physical Education (PE) page for Waverley Junior Academy.

PE is a highly valued and integral part at the heart of our curriculum at Waverley JA, with our own PE specialist - Mr Coleman - delivering a broad and balanced curriculum to all pupils across school.

Our Intent
During their time at Waverley Junior Academy, every pupil will have the opportunity to represent the academy for our sports teams, attend a range of sporting after-school clubs around a variety of interests, learn key life skills (such as bikeability cycling and swimming proficiency) and represent their house team in our annual sports day. Our first ever sports day was hosted at the English Institute of Sport in April 2024, which was a real highlight for everyone connected to Waverley. This was followed up by hosting our 2025 sports day on the school field for every pupil from FS0 up to Y6. This plethora of opportunities on offer is inclusive for all, and aims to inspire every pupil to develop a love for physical activity and sport for life.

Inspiring pupils through PE & School Sport

We have four house teams that are named after local sporting figures and provide inspiration for our pupils, encourage them to strive for excellence and empower achievement. These are:

- Jessica Ennis (Former Team GB Olympic Gold Medalist)

- Harry Maguire (Manchester United and England footballer)

- Johnny Nelson (Former Professional Boxer & World Cruiserweight Champion)

- Louie Hinchliffe (Team GB sprinter & 2024 Olympic bronze medalist)

Take a look at some of the amazing interactions and moments of inspiration they have had with our Waverley pupils in recent times.

Waverley Junior Academy - After School Provision

At Waverley Junior Academy we offer two multisport after-school clubs and a variety of multisport lunchtime clubs throughout the week that are run by our dedicated sports leaders. The clubs support our pupils to participate in, enjoy and progress in different sports. We also take part in Rotherham School Games competitions, ACET competitions, competitions that we run ourselves and individual fixtures. All of these clubs and events are organised by our PE teacher, Mr Rory Coleman.

After-school activities for the Autumn term, 2025, take place on the following days:

  • Wednesday (3:00-4:00)- Year 5/6 football after-school club - Mr Coleman - Autumn Term
  • Wednesday (3:00-4:00)- Year 3/4 football after-school club - Mr Sills - Autumn Term

Ballers Coaching Company also offer an after-school service for parents too, with more information further down the page.

Celebrating Achievements

At Waverley Junior Academy, we are passionate about encouraging pupils to become physically active and pursue their interests with sporting organisations outside of school. We heavily track data of which pupils are participating outside of school and support pupils in signposting to clubs if they develop an interest in any sport. We highly value the importance of recognising and celebrating any achievements from our pupils in regular celebration assemblies.

These video compilations (below) capture some fantastic highlights from our talented athletes.

Competitions & Events

We are looking forward to providing many more opportunities for our pupils throughout 2025-2026. We aim for every KS2 pupil to represent our academy in school sport at least once throughout the year, and track this data to inform team selections and maximise pupil opportunities.

Take a look at our sporting highlights and achievements below from recent academic years. We enjoyed so many accolades last year across a multitude of sports, with becoming the Rotherham Y4 Basketball and Rotherham Y6 Sports Hall Athletics CHAMPIONS to reach the South Yorkshire finals being stand-out moments!
