FS2 Teacher - Mrs Walton

We are so excited to welcome you back after the Easter break as we begin a new term together. This term, we will continue to build on the skills and learning developed during the Spring term, with a strong focus on developing independence, confidence and preparing the children for a smooth transition into KS1. The children will be learning through play, exploring new ideas, and carrying out simple investigations as they deepen their understanding of the world around them. We’re looking forward to another wonderful term filled with curiosity, creativity, and discovery.

Thank you for your continued support – we can’t wait to see all the amazing progress your children will continue to make.

Our Summer 1 Topic is ‘Animal Kingdom'

We will be learning about a variety of animals, including pets, farm animals, zoo animals, and minibeasts.

In literacy, we will use stories such as Mog, Rosie’s Walk, Dear Zoo, Minibeast Bop, and Superworm as inspiration for our writing. The children will retell these stories, focusing on what happens at the beginning, middle, and end.

They will use their phonics knowledge to write words, phrases, and simple sentences linked to each story. As part of this, the children will write captions for the different minibeasts who attended the Minibeast Bop, and create speech bubbles for the characters in the Superworm story.

In maths, we will be focusing on learning length, addition and subtraction.

During the afternoons, the children will be learning how to take care of pets and how pets can differ around the world. We will also be looking at farming, what animals live on farms, what baby animals are called, what grows on a farm and comparing farming around the world. Additionally, we will be looking at different minibeasts and comparing insects in the UK to insects around the world. We will also be looking at life cycles and focusing on the life cycle of a butterfly.

Key Vocabulary pupils will learn through this topic can be found in the table below. The definitions have been designed specifically in a child-friendly way and to link to previous knowledge.

diet, threat, endangered, protect, woodland, pet

We’ll also be enjoying several exciting ‘WOW’ moments this term, including our trip to Cannon Hall farm, a visit from a vet and a special workshop delivered by RE today.

Summer 2 is Journey Around the World

In Literacy, we will be continuing to learn about animals by using a variety of classic bookshelf books as a stimulus for our writing. For Rumble in the Jungle, we will be writing animal poems and looking at rhyming words. For ‘Sharing a Shell’, we will be writing captions about the story. Additionally, we will be choosing an Arctic animal to write facts about. Moreover, for ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ and ‘Room on the Broom', we will then be diving into the wonderful world of fantasy and writing descriptive words, phrases and sentences about the stories using phonics knowledge.

In maths, we will be looking at doubling, sharing, odd an even numbers, numbers to 20, and capacity.

During the afternoons, we continue to focus on animals. We will be looking at wild animals and their differing habitats around the world. We will be discussing how some animals are endangered and how climate change is contributing to destroying animal’s habitats. Additionally, we will be focusing on polar animals and looking at the animals that live at the north and south pole. We will also be focusing, again, on climate change and how polar habitats are being destroyed. We will be looking at what we can do to help stop this. Moreover, we will also be looking at the British seaside, how they have changed over time and what geographical features we can spot at the seaside. Also, we will be looking at different modes of transport and how they have changed over time.

Phonics

Over the two half-terms, we will be continuing to learn new phonic sounds and words.

Some children are practising reading and writing words and sentences using phase 2 phonics and will start to learn new phase 3 sounds.

Some children that have previously learnt some phase 3 sounds, tricky words and high-frequency words, will continue to use these sounds to blend and read both real and alien words. We will also begin to start learning phase 4 blends, tricky words and high-frequency words. We will be learning to use these blends to read both real and alien words.
