Leopards - Miss Wild

Honey Bees - Miss Martin

Sea Otters - Miss Coldwell

Y4 Teaching Assistants - Miss Westwood

Hello! Welcome to the Year 4 class page. Here you will find key information about the Year 4 curriculum, important dates and expectations of the children.

Spring 1

In Spring 1, our topic will be ‘Amazing Amazon’.

In English, we will be focussing on the text “Charlie and The Chocolate Factory”. We will be producing a variety of writing for example, a setting description, an advertisement in the form of an Instagram post and a character description. We are focussing on shorter writing tasks to ensure that KS1 and KS2 SPaG elements are correctly and consistently used where appropriate.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, Quentin Blake | Waterstones

In maths, we will continue to learn about multiplication and division. We will be focussing on multiplying 3 numbers together accurately, finding factors, choosing efficient methods to work out a multiplication calculation, multiplying 2 digits by 1 digit using column multiplication and multiplying 3 digits by 1 digit again using column multiplication. Then, we shall move onto dividing 2 digits by 1 digit. After we have completed our multiplication and division unit we will be moving onto fractions. We will recap some Y3 knowledge on unit and non unit fractions before looking at tenths, equivalent fractions, fractions over 1, counting in fractions, adding/subtracting fractions, subtraction from a whole and calculating fractions of an amount.

‘Amazing Amazon’ where we will be completing an in depth study of Brazil.  This will also include an overview of the continent of South America.  We will look at poverty and the need for industrial growth to frame the exploitation of the Amazon Rainforest.   Conservation will also be introduced which provides a background for later learning.

In art, we will be completing an artist study on Henri Rousseau and creating some mixed media artwork inspired by South America.  In RE, we will be looking at Hinduism. We will be learning about classification in science, which is linked with our class trip to the Butterfly House.

Spring 2

Our topic for Spring 2 is… ‘Brilliant Biomes!’

In maths, we will continue looking at fractions.  We will then introduce decimals for the first time. Whilst learning about decimals we shall focus on: recognising tenths/hundredths, look at tenths and decimals, tenths on a place value grid, tenths on a numberline. After this we will move onto hundredths, hundredths as decimals and hundredths on a place value grid. We will finish our decimals unit by dividing 1 digit numbers by 10, 2 digit numbers by 10 and 1 or 2 digits by 100.

We will be learning all about the different biomes around the world and how they are affected based on their location around the world. We will discover what animals and plants live in these biomes and how they can be adapted to survive in often extreme conditions!
