Welcome to Year 2

Welcome to the Year 2 page!

Koalas - Mrs Walton and Miss Haywood

Giraffes – Miss Scott and Mrs Mappin

Sharks – Miss Taylor, Miss Handisides and Miss Jones

We are really looking forward to the year ahead and all the exciting learning it will bring. This year, we will explore a range of fun topics, take on new challenges, and enjoy lots of engaging activities together.

In Year 2, we also focus on helping children to become more independent and build resilience—important skills for school and beyond. We aim to create an inclusive and supportive environment where children feel confident, happy, and safe to make mistakes – as mistakes often provide the best learning opportunities!

It’s going to be a fantastic year full of learning, progress, and fun!

Our Summer 2 topic will be… From our classroom to Kenya.

In English, we will be writing a recount based on our school trip to Clumber Park. After this, we will be learning all about different SPaG elements, such as prefixes and suffixes and utilising these in our writing. We will then move on to writing our own short narratives based on a twist of a traditional tale. Alongside this, we will also be learning about homophones and when to use them.

In Maths, we will continue to learn how to draw and understand tally charts and pictograms in our statistics unit.  To ensure all our knowledge is secure, we will be applying this to real life examples and completing lots of problem solving and reasoning questions. Following this, we will move onto our fractions unit where we will learn how to make equal parts, recognise and find a half, a third and understand unit and non-unit fractions. To finish our fractions unit we will begin to count in fractions. We will also be describing movement and turns of shapes. To finish our maths learning this term, we will be learning about length and height, measuring this and comparing this.

In geography, we will be learning about Kenya, and how this is different to where we live .

In science, we will be learning about different plants and how different conditions can affect their growth.

In RE, we will be learning about special places and how they are different to different people.

In art, we will be using watercolours to create our own African sunset.

In PSHE, we will thinking about transitioning to Y3 and the key knowledge and skills we will need to be successful.
