Welcome to Year 2
Welcome to the Year 2 page
Koalas - Mrs Walton and Miss Haywood
Giraffes – Miss Scott and Mrs Mappin
Sharks – Miss Taylor, Miss Glover and Miss Jones
We are really looking forward to the year ahead and all the exciting learning it will bring. This year, we will explore a range of fun topics, take on new challenges, and enjoy lots of engaging activities together.
In Year 2, we also focus on helping children to become more independent and build resilience—important skills for school and beyond. We aim to create an inclusive and supportive environment where children feel confident, happy, and safe to make mistakes – as mistakes often provide the best learning opportunities!
It’s going to be a fantastic year full of learning, progress, and fun!

Our Summer 1 topic will be… Fit for adventure (Explorers)
In English, we will be learning about non-chronological reports. We will be using our knowledge of the new explorer Neil Armstrong to write our own non-chronological report about his life and experiences. After this, we will be using our knowledge of space to write a setting description. In our final week of this half term, we will be writing a short space related poem to showcase our knowledge.
In Maths, we will continue to learn how to draw and understand tally charts and pictograms in our statistics unit. To ensure all our knowledge is secure, we will be applying this to real life examples and completing lots of problem solving and reasoning questions. Following this, we will move onto our fractions unit where we will learn how to make equal parts, recognise and find a half, a third and understand unit and non-unit fractions. To finish our fractions unit we will begin to count in fractions. We will also be describing movement and turns of shapes. To finish our maths learning this term, we will be learning about length and height, measuring this and comparing this.
In history, we will be learning about explorers and why they are important. We will be learning about Christopher Columbus and his discoveries, Neil Armstrong and Helen Sharman. We will then be thinking about where else there is to discover and how this might happen in the future. To finish our learning, we will be debating who is the best explorer and justifying our opinions.
In science, we will be learning about how to be healthy. We will be learning about what humans and animals need to survive and to be healthy. Our science learning links to our DT study where we will be learning how to prepare fruits and vegetables.
In RE, we will be learning all about how Muslims live and learning more about Prophet Muhammad and the 5 Pillars of Islam.
In art, we will be learning all about portraits and how to accurately draw different facial features.
In PSHE, we will learn about where money comes from and how to use it.

Spellings for the half term are set for independent practice on Spelling Shed, however these spellings are not tested within school weekly. Instead, we will have a spelling test at the end of the half term testing a random mix of these spellings. Alongside this, your child will be set a spelling list weekly by their Phonics teacher, based on the new sounds or spelling rules they have learnt that week.
Children have a log in for TT Rockstars in their planners. This online platform will allow them to practise their 2s, 5s, and 10s timestables. Please note that timestables will not be taught in class until later in the year.
