Summer Term
Our topic for Summer 1 is Explorers!
English
In English, the children will write a story based around the book ‘Journey’ by Aaron Becker. They will explore new vocabulary, learn about the structure and language of stories and use a range of coordinating and subordinating conjunctions.
Maths
During this half-term, the children will focus on problem-solving and reasoning questions.
Computing
Children will develop their understanding of what information technology is and will begin to identify examples. They will discuss where they have seen IT in school and beyond, in settings such as shops, hospitals, and libraries. Children will investigate how IT improves our world, and they will learn about the importance of using IT responsibly.
History
Children will answer the questions - Who is Christopher Columbus, and what did he discover? Who is Neil Armstrong, and why is he famous? Who is Helen Sharman, and what has she achieved? They will also consider areas of the world that we still need to explore and how we could do this.
Art
Children will understand the difference between a portrait and a self-portrait. They will look at and discuss a number of famous portraits using art vocabulary. Children will practice drawing a face, considering the placement and proportions of features. They will finish the unit by completing half of a portrait (a half-and-half picture).
Science
Children will distinguish between an object and the material it is made of. They will investigate the properties of materials and how they help objects to function. They will answer the question - Are the properties of metal always the same?

Our topic for Summer 2 is Africa!
Maths
They will explore length, mass, capacity and temperature, while recapping the four operations.
Computing
Children will use a computer to create music. They will listen to different pieces of music and consider how music can make them think and feel. Children will compare creating music digitally and non-digitally. They will look at patterns in music and purposefully create a piece of music.
Geography
Children will locate Kenya on a world map. They will explore Kenya's landscape and climate, considering both its physical and human features. They will compare Kenya to South Yorkshire. Children will decide where they would prefer to go on holiday and create an advert justifying their choice.
Science
Children will revisit Y1 learning and explore the structure of a basic plant. They will consider how plants change through the different seasons and how this links to what they have learnt about life cycles. Children will investigate the conditions that allow plants to grow and find out about the types of plants that grow in the climates of Kenya.
Art
Children will learn how to mix tertiary colours, complementary colours and analogous colours. They will practice a range of techniques with watercolour paints and create an African sunset painting.
Music
Children will create soundscapes of Kenya.
