We are so excited to welcome you and your child to the start of a wonderful school year! This term is all about settling in, building friendships, and developing independence. The children will be learning through play, exploring new ideas, and having lots of fun along the way. We’re looking forward to a fantastic Autumn term full of laughter, learning, and discovery.

Thank you for your continued support – we can’t wait to see all the amazing things your children will achieve!

Our first topic will be ‘Marvelous Me and My Wonderful Community’

In Literacy, pupils will be exploring a selection of engaging stories that are pictured above. They will practise retelling the stories in their own words to help build their confidence with language and understanding story structure. Children will learn about characters, who they are and what part they play in a story. Through our phonics learning, they will work on identifying the initial sounds in words and begin using this knowledge to write simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words linked to the stories we read. There will be lots of opportunities for children to challenge themselves and grow as confident storytellers and early writers.

In Maths the children will be focusing on subitising—recognising numbers of objects without counting—up to five. This important skill helps them develop a deep and secure understanding of numbers to 5. They will explore numbers in a variety of ways, including using real objects, images, and practical activities. Children will also be introduced to key mathematical language such as greater than, less than, fewer, one more, one less, and the same, which they will use to compare and talk about numbers. Each week, we’ll have a special song linked to their learning to make number work fun, memorable, and meaningful.

Our topic work will focus on helping children become more independent and confident in managing their own needs throughout the school day. We’ll be supporting them to build respectful relationships with their peers and adults, express their own feelings, and begin to recognise how others might be feeling too. In Understanding of the World, we’ll be learning about the important people who help us in our community, such as doctors, nurses, dentists, postal workers, refuse collectors, teachers, vets, opticians, paramedics, and firefighters. We’ll also spend time talking about our families and learning more about ourselves. In Art, we’ll be exploring printing, using a variety of tools and materials to create our own colourful designs.

Key vocabulary pupils will learn through this topic can be found in the table below. The definitions have been designed specifically in a child-friendly way and to link to previous knowledge.
