Welcome to Year 2
Koalas - Mrs Royle & Mrs Beckett
Giraffes - Miss Scott & Mrs Mappin
Sharks - Miss Taylor/Miss Glover & Miss Yates
We are really looking forward to the year ahead and all the exciting learning it will bring. This year, we will explore a range of fun topics, take on new challenges, and enjoy lots of engaging activities together.
In Year 2, we also focus on helping children to become more independent and build resilience—important skills for school and beyond. We aim to create an inclusive and supportive environment where children feel confident, happy, and safe to make mistakes – as mistakes often provide the best learning opportunities!
It’s going to be a fantastic year full of learning, progress, and fun!
Our first topic will be… Can you hear me? (Communication through the ages)
In English, we will be consolidating our knowledge of the alphabet and recalling all letter sounds and letter names. We will learn what a sentence needs and apply this to our own writing. We will develop our skills towards building a short narrative accurately. We will also be learning about nouns and adjectives to make our writing more descriptive and interesting for the reader.
In Maths, we will begin with the topic: place value, exploring numbers up to 100. Children will learn to count objects by making groups of 10, recognise tens and ones in two-digit numbers, and use place value charts to help understand how numbers are built. We will also practise partitioning numbers to 100 in different ways and writing numbers in words. As we grow in confidence with number structure, we will move on to addition and subtraction, using our place value knowledge to solve problems and explain our thinking. Progressing on from this, we will be consolidating our previous learning by applying this to real life examples involving money.
In history, we will be learning about communication through the decades and investigating how this has changed and why.
In science, we will be learning about different types of materials and their properties.
In RE, we will be learning all about the good news that Christians believe Jesus brings. More specifically, we will be learning about the story of Matthew.
In art, we will be studying the artist Glen Alps and learning how to create a calligraph print. We will create our own calligraph print using recycled materials as our final piece.
In PSHE, we will learn about how to make a happy school, all about who lives in our neighbourhood, online strangers, if families all stay the same and how they should treat each other.

Important Information
For Koalas our P.E days are and Monday and Thursday.
For Giraffes our P.E days are Tuesday and Thursday.
For Sharks our P.E days are Monday and Wednesday.
Please make sure your child’s P.E kit is in school on these days and labelled with their name and class.
Spellings for the half-term are set for independent practice on Spelling Shed. However, these spellings are not tested within school weekly. Instead, we will have a spelling test at the end of the half-term testing a random mix of these spellings. Alongside this, your child will be set a spelling list weekly by their Phonics teacher, based on the new sounds or spelling rules they have learnt that week.
Children have a log in for TT Rockstars in their planners. This online platform will allow them to practise their 2s, 5s, and 10s timestables. Please note that timestables will not be taught in class until later in the year.
