Welcome to Year 2
Koalas - Mrs Royle & Mrs Beckett
Giraffes - Miss Scott & Mrs Mappin
Sharks - Miss Taylor/Miss Glover & Miss Yates
We are really looking forward to the year ahead and all the exciting learning it will bring. This year, we will explore a range of fun topics, take on new challenges, and enjoy lots of engaging activities together.
In Year 2, we also focus on helping children to become more independent and build resilience—important skills for school and beyond. We aim to create an inclusive and supportive environment where children feel confident, happy, and safe to make mistakes – as mistakes often provide the best learning opportunities!
It’s going to be a fantastic year full of learning, progress, and fun!

Our topic will be… The Circle of Life

In English, we will be learning about the different types of sentences and using different subordinating conjunctions. After this, we will be using these to write different sets of instructions. To help us writing different instructions, we will be reading a variety of different instruction texts.
In Maths, we will be continuing with our learning of shape. We will learn to count sides and vertices, draw 2D shapes, learn about lines of symmetry and make different patterns using shape. Then we will begin our multiplication and division unit In our multiplication learning, we will be learning how to recognise, add and make equal groups, use arrays and begin to learn our 2s, 5s and 10s times tables. We will then progress onto division learning where we will make equal groups by sharing, learn about odd and even numbers and then divide by 2s, 5s and 10s. We will learn how to draw and understand tally charts and pictograms in our statistics unit. To ensure all of our knowledge is secure, we will be applying this to real life examples and completing lots of problem solving and reasoning questions.
In Science, we will be learning about life cycles of different living things and learning all about food chains. We will be discussing how animals change and grow, and what different thing animals eat to help them survive.
In RE, we will be learning about the Christian Easter story. We will be reading short passages from the Bible and learning to retell the main parts of the Easter story and discussing what this can teach us.
In Music, we will be learning about Orchestra. In this topic we will be learning about how music can make us feel and how this can enhance our experience of listening. We will begin to create different rhythms and evaluate how we can improve these.
In Art, we will be beginning our unit on drawing. We will be learning how to use tone, shading and drawing using different light sources.
Key vocabulary pupils will learn through this topic can be found in the table below.

Important Information
For Koalas our P.E days are and Monday and Thursday.
For Giraffes our P.E days are Tuesday and Thursday.
For Sharks our P.E days are Monday and Wednesday.
Please make sure your child’s P.E kit is in school on these days and labelled with their name and class.
Spellings for the half-term are set for independent practice on Spelling Shed. However, these spellings are not tested within school weekly. Instead, we will have a spelling test at the end of the half-term testing a random mix of these spellings. Alongside this, your child will be set a spelling list weekly by their Phonics teacher, based on the new sounds or spelling rules they have learnt that week.
Children have a log in for TT Rockstars in their planners. This online platform will allow them to practise their 2s, 5s, and 10s timestables. Please note that timestables will not be taught in class until later in the year.
