Welcome to Year 2
Koalas - Mrs Royle & Mrs Beckett
Giraffes - Miss Scott & Mrs Mappin
Sharks - Miss Taylor/Miss Glover & Miss Yates
We are really looking forward to the year ahead and all the exciting learning it will bring. This year, we will explore a range of fun topics, take on new challenges, and enjoy lots of engaging activities together.
In Year 2, we also focus on helping children to become more independent and build resilience—important skills for school and beyond. We aim to create an inclusive and supportive environment where children feel confident, happy, and safe to make mistakes – as mistakes often provide the best learning opportunities!
It’s going to be a fantastic year full of learning, progress, and fun!
Our Autumn 2 topic will be… From fire to future

In English, we will be beginning to learn about different word classes such as nouns and adjectives. This will support us when we are moving onto writing a range of different character descriptions. We will make sure we are using an interesting choice of adjectives to make our writing engaging for our readers.
In Maths, we will explore the topic of addition and subtraction. We will begin by learning our bonds to 10 and 20 to then progressing onto fact families and related facts. We will also practise adding numbers by making ten, adding to the next ten. Following this, we will build on our knowledge by learning how to subtract 2-digit numbers across a ten. Progressing on from this, we will be consolidating our previous learning by applying this to real life examples and completing lots of problem solving and reasoning questions.
In history, we will be learning about the Great Fire of London and investigating how this has impacted London. We will be investigating different artefacts and discussing who might have used the object and how they might have been used.
In geography, our geography learning will be focused on the UK and its cities. We will be investigating the human and physical features of different cities. We will be assessing our knowledge by voting for which city we believe is the best in the UK.
Key vocabulary pupils will learn through this topic can be found in the table below.

Important Information
For Koalas our P.E days are and Monday and Thursday.
For Giraffes our P.E days are Tuesday and Thursday.
For Sharks our P.E days are Monday and Wednesday.
Please make sure your child’s P.E kit is in school on these days and labelled with their name and class.
Spellings for the half-term are set for independent practice on Spelling Shed. However, these spellings are not tested within school weekly. Instead, we will have a spelling test at the end of the half-term testing a random mix of these spellings. Alongside this, your child will be set a spelling list weekly by their Phonics teacher, based on the new sounds or spelling rules they have learnt that week.
Children have a log in for TT Rockstars in their planners. This online platform will allow them to practise their 2s, 5s, and 10s timestables. Please note that timestables will not be taught in class until later in the year.
