Welcome to the Monkey class with Miss Tracey and Mrs Ratcliffe. This page is for our parents and children to use together. It includes information about what FS2 are learning, key dates, homework and helpful websites.

Our topic in Spring is ‘Animal Kingdom’.

We will be learning about a variety of different animals such as pets, farm animals, African animals, jungle animals and sea creatures. In literacy, we will be using the stories from the ‘Mog’ series, ‘Rosie’s Walk’, ‘Dear Zoo’, ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ and ‘Sharing a Shell’ as a stimulus for our writing. We will be retelling the stories, thinking about what happens at the beginning, middle and end. The children will be using their phonics knowledge to write words, phrases and sentences about each of the stories.

In maths, we will be focusing on learning number bonds and subitising from numbers 5 to 10.

During the afternoons, the children will be learning how to take care of pets and how pets can differ around the world. We will also be looking at farming, what animals live on farms, what baby animals are called, what grows on a farm and comparing farming around the world. Additionally, we will be looking at wild animals and their differing habitats around the world. We will be discussing how some animals are endangered and how climate change is contributing to destroying animal’s habitats.

Summer 2

In Literacy, we will be continuing to learn about animals by using a variety of classic bookshelf books as a stimulus for our writing. We will be writing captions for the different minibeasts who attended the minibeast bop. We will also be writing speech bubbles for the different characters in the Superworm story. Additionally, we will be choosing an Artic animal to write facts about. We will then be diving into the wonderful world of fantasy and writing descriptive words, phrases and sentences about different stories using phonics knowledge.

In maths, we will be looking at odd an even numbers, comparing length, width and recognising numbers to 20.

During the afternoons, we be continuing to focus on animals. We will be looking at different minibeasts and comparing insects in the UK to insects around the world. We will also be looking at life cycles and focusing on the life cycle of a butterfly. Additionally, we will be focusing on polar animals and looking at the animals that live at the north and south pole. We will also be focusing, again, on climate change and how polar habitats are being destroyed. We will be looking at what we can do to help stop this.

Phonics:

Over the two half terms, we will be continuing to learn new phonic sounds and words.

Some children are practicing reading and writing words and sentences using phase 2 phonics and will start to learn new phase 3 sounds.

Some children that have previously learns some phase 3 sounds, tricky words and high frequency words, will continue to use these sounds to blend and read both real and alien words. We will also begin to start learning phase 4 blends, tricky words and high frequency words. We will be learning to use these blends to read both real and alien words.

Story time

Books shared at story time have been carefully selected to ensure our pupils; learn new vocabulary, speak in clear sentences, develop their conversational skills, deepen their understanding and ask and answer questions.
