Spring Term

Pancake Day 

As Shrove Tuesday fell in the half term break, we celebrated Pancake Day on Monday 19th February. All pupils from FS0 to Y6 took part in fun activities such as sharing stories, making pancajkes and writing instructions on how to do this and completing races.


Chinese New Year

On Thursday 8th and Friday 9th February we celebrated Chinese New Year. This year is the year of the dragon. Throughout the day the children explored the story of how Chinese New Year began and found out how it is celebrated. They took part in discussions, completed a selection of fun and creative activities and attended a Chinese New Year assembly.


Safer Internet Day 

On Tuesday 6th February, we took part in Safer Internet Day. Pupils attended a special assembly and each class completed activities to help them understand how and why to stay safe online. Careers Week

The week beginning 22nd January was Careers Week at Waverley. Throughout the week, all pupils took part in lessons linked to different occupations. They talked about the jobs different subjects can lead to and the skills that they would need to be successful. Pupils also attended a Careers Fair where they had the opportunity to speak to visitors from a variety of fields and ask any questions they had. These included AZETS Accounts and Business Advisory Services, CMS Law and UK Atomic Energy Authority. The children had a fantastic week and it was great to hear them talking about what they would like to do in the future! 


Autumn Term 

Mission Christmas

We are very proud to have supported Hallam FM's Mission Christmas Appeal this year. Hallam FM’s mission is “Christmas for every child”. Through our partnership with William H Brown Estate Agents, Waverley Junior Academy was a drop-off point. We were blown away by everyone's generosity and know what a difference these gifts will make. Thank you!


Christmas Jumper & Dinner Day 

On Thursday 7th December we took part in Christmas Jumper Day. All pupils came to school in a Christmassy outfit and they looked brilliant. They also enjoyed a delicious Christmas dinner, cooked by our fantastic kitchen staff. 


Snowflake Switch on!

On Monday 4th December Sheffield Children's Hospital turned their Christmas lights on. The Waverley Junior Academy snowflake looks amazing and will make a huge difference to the work the hospital does! 


Pyjama Day

On Friday 1st December we kick-started our Christmas celebrations with a whole school pyjama day. Pupils enjoyed coming to school in their comfortable clothes, decorating their classrooms and watching a Christmas film in the afternoon. 


Road Safety Week 

The week beginning 20th November all pupils took part in Road Safety Week. This year's theme was 'Let's Talk About Speed'. We began the week with 'Be Bright Be Seen' Day and the children looked fantastic in their colourful outfits. Throughout the rest of the week pupils took part in activities to ensure they know how to keep safe in the community and the importance of the Green Cross Code. 


Children In Need 

On Friday 17th November we were very proud to support 'Children In Need'. All pupils from FS0 to Y6 came to school in non-uniform and donated £1 to this amazing charity. We raised an incredible £470.28. Pupils spent time learning about the brilliant work the charity completes as well as taking part in fun, spotty activities. 


Anti-bullying Week 

The week beginning 13th November was Anti-bullying Week at Waverley Junior Academy. This year's theme was 'Make a Noise About Bullying'. We started the week by taking part in Odd Socks Day and celebrating how amazing it is that we are all different. Throughout the rest of the week pupils took part in a variety of activities including attending a special assembly, reading and discussing stories and making posters. 


Remembrance Service 

On Friday 19th November we held our Remembrance Service, and we could not be prouder of our pupils. We came together as an academy to remember all those who fought in World War I, World War II and all other wars around the world, both past and present. We thanked them for keeping us safe. Each class laid a wreath by our school memorial, our amazing Y6s read poems and we held a 2-minute silence. The children were incredibly respectful throughout. 


Status Quo Visit

On Thursday 9th November, Key Stage 2 attended a workshop hosted by Jeff Rich, the drummer from Status Quo. They learnt about the history of drumming, enjoyed a demonstration by Jeff and even had the chance to try different instruments and play alongside him. 


Halloween Discos - supporting Sheffield Children's Hospital's Snowflake Appeal 

On 30th October, all pupils from FS0 to Y6 had a fantastic time at our Halloween Discos. They danced with their friends and enjoyed some tasty snacks! From ticket sales and the tuck shop we raised an incredible £1,073.28! This means we can sponsor a snowflake at the hospital. This money will make a huge difference towards the hospital securing a helipad. Thank you everyone! 


Black History Month 

In October, the whole academy celebrated Black History Month. Pupils attended special assemblies to learn about this year's theme 'Saluting our Sisters, and Honouring Matriarchs of Movements'. All classes completed activities such as conducting a character study of black role models and creating fact files about them or reading about Katherine Johnson and her remarkable contributions to the Apollo 13 mission. 


Waverley Bike Track Opening 

On Tuesday 26th September our Y2 Sharks and Y6 Jaguars attended the official opening of the Waverley Bike Track and had a fantastic time. They got to see a demonstration from Team GB BMX racer George Hunt, watch 3 time Olympic champion cyclist Ed Clancy OBE cut the ribbon and then have a go on the track themselves! Everyone was impressed with their skills and manners.
